Gloriou5 #9 - Bowling With Axes, Making Tiny Nations and Dirty Library Books

July 19, 2017

Behold this week's booty of digital treasures unearthed while kicking around Al Gore's seductive internet. We have Canadian axe men aiming to take over American cities, starting your own Micro-nation, getting away with destroying priceless museum art, and viral stupid human tricks marketing. This 9th installment of Gloriou5 is brought to you by Container Yard and the Swain Sinus Show. Enjoy!

1. Modern Day Bowling, With Axes

Beer drinking and ax throwing. Sign me up! That’s what I call a damn good time. Described as “darts on steroids”, Bad Axe Urban Throwing Clubs are bringing the thrill of a traditional Canadian backyard pastime to America city folks. This is the best thing to be imported from our Canadian neighbors since Nickelback. Taylor Atchison, please open up one of these franchises.

 2. Tired Of The U.S.A.? Make Yourself King,

Meet Kevin Baugh, Benevolent Dictator of the Republic of Molossia: Population 32. Located in the the Nevada Desert, Molossia has a border, post office, currency, flag, anthem and a space program. It’s a perfect combination of politics and a healthy dose of humor. Micro-nations are more common than you might think, there are hundreds of them around the world. In fact, I happen to be married to micro-nation royalty, Lady Stacy Wellborn of the Principality of Sealand. She even owns land in Sealand, 1 foot by 1 foot on the east side of the metal platform. (Story submitted by Scott Tindle)

3. What Happens If You Accidentally Damage Or Destroy A Priceless Work Of Art In A Museum?

It seems not much. Well, they will ban you from coming to the museum again, but really politely. Find out why this happens more than you think and why it’s not such a big deal.

4.  Protecting Children From Dirty Library Books

While at first I found a book sterilizer invention silly and unnecessary, after further investigation I have turned the page on this book sterilizer.  A 2013 test of popular books at Belgium's Antwerp Public Library turned up traces of cocaine and herpes (source: mentalfloss). According to the study, books seem well adapted for carrying small-pox, measles, scarlet fever, trachoma, diphtheria, erysipelas, dysentery, typhoid, and tuberculosis. I am this close to starting an online petition demanding that the Mobile Library System invest in this state of the art book sterilizer. (Source: claridychina & trendhunter.com)

5, Obsolete Camera + Viral Video + Stupid Human Trick = Internet Immortality

This dude is all business when it comes to playing with business cards. Samsung used its H205 Camcorder as the camera and the prop for this entertaining display of content marketing. This is a classic (and retro) example of the power of experiential content viral video that lives up the marketing adage “show, don't tell.” Kudo’s Samsung for not just making another boring video of specs and benefits of your product. Plus, you’ve further proven to the world that if someone spends 10000 hours to become a card throwing James Bond like-villains they to can become digitally immortal and semi-internet-famous with 8 million views. This H205 camera may be old and obsolete, but who doesn’t still find enjoyment watching this dumbass video?
